In a course on “political communication”, the first logical move is to define what this term means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political communication is nothing but communication strategies used in the field of politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This definition, again, does not bring us much further since it just plays around with the words of the linguistic construction. The adjective \u201cpolitical\u201d becomes the substantive \u201cpolitics\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trap of such common words is that they frequently are ambiguous and vague. They have accumulated several meanings in the course of their long history \u2013 and thus, the actual significance becomes blurry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal of this introductory learning unit is to define what we understand in this course under \u201cPolitics\u201d. It will be a brief and concise definition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The etymological origin of the word helps us, in a first step, fix the meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In further steps, we will reflect on the nature and origin of political power building on the work of some classic authors who pioneered in political theory (Plato, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Hume).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word politics comes from Greek POLIS (\u03c0\u03cc\u03bb\u03b9\u03c2). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
